The American Revolution

I am back with another post on some great work that we are doing in class.  This week we began researching about the American Revolution.  The students began watching videos, reading articles and books on the causes and events that led up to the American Revolution.  We will be doing some exciting work in reading and writing workshop on this topic.

For next few weeks, we will study the biographies of famous African-Americans who had a transformational effect on the lives of others.  Your children will learn about the life of Ruby Bridges and study how her courage led to the integration of public schools.  I invite all of you to find stories of famous African-Americans that have inspired you!

Food Chains

Hello everyone!
We are learning about food chains and food webs in class.  The students will need to create their own food web and sustain it.  There is an awesome BrainPop game called Food Fight.  Students will use this simulated game to create a food web that centered around an animal of their choice.  They will have to complete against another classmate to see who can create the best food web.

Fractions!

Hello everyone!
Today, we watched an animated video titled "The Weird Number".  It introduces many fraction concepts in a fun way.  The students seemed to really enjoy it!  I encourage you to watch it together at home and use some of these questions below to guide a discussion:

Division Strategies

Hello Everyone!
We have begun division in math class.  I found some videos that might be helpful.  Each one is a little different!  They show some strategies that you can use for solving problems.

Video 1:  Division Using Arrays by Wendy Smith.  This shows the "break apart" strategy for division (Distributive Property).  A great visual tool for solving division problems.

Video 2: Division for Beginners by LadyDMcollector.  This video breaks down the basic concept of division and its relationship to multiplication.

Video 3: An overview of division strategies.  Some that we have learned and others that we will explore soon in class.

Plants!

Hello Everyone!
Today we watched an awesome introductory video on plants by Bill Nye, The Science Guy!  You can click here to check it out again!

You can complete an assignment/task below for extra credit...worth up to 2 homework points!

Choose one of the following...

1) Create a poster showing how we use plants in everyday life.  Your poster should include pictures or drawings of plants and a short explanation of how they are useful.  You can type or print neatly on the poster.

or

2) Conduct an experiment that you saw from the Bill Nye video.  Take pictures and write up the results of your experiment.  Explain what you learned from doing the experiment (in a short paragraph 4-5 sentences).

New York Geography and Landforms

Hello Everyone!
I'm back with another weekly post.  We have been studying and learning about the geography of New York.  We learned that New York State has a diverse landscape.  We learned about the different landforms in class.

Below are two links:  One is a photo tour of New York State divided up into the 7 regions, the other is picture dictionary of the most common landforms of New York.  Use the photo tour and see how many of the different landforms you can identify.  It should be a lot of fun!
